IQAC Workshop on “Safety Requirements for Accreditation”





Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) organised a Workshop on “Safety Requirements for Accreditation” on 21 May 2025. Faculty members of different departments (Arch, BME, CSE, ChE, CE, EEE, IPE, ME, MME, NAME, NCE, WRE, URP, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Humanities), a total of forty (40) participants actively participated in the event. This timely initiative brought together key stakeholders from across BUET to enhance understanding and implementation of campus-wide safety protocols in alignment with accreditation standards. The workshop featured expert-led sessions on Safe Campus, Fire Safety, Fire Protection, Lab Safety and collaborative policy development.

Prof. Dr. Abdul Hasib Chowdhury, Honourable Pro-Vice-Chancellor, BUET, joined as the Chief Guest of the inaugural session, emphasizing the institution’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a safe and resilient learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. Prof. Dr. Kazi Bayzid Kabir, Director, IQAC, BUET, greeted all the participants at the beginning of the Workshop. Different sessions of the workshop were conducted by the Expert Members of the Fire Safety Implementation Committee, BUET. The technical sessions began with an insightful presentation on Safe Campus by Prof. Dr. Md Ashikur Rahman Joarder, Professor of Architecture Department and Additional Director (Excellence in Teaching and Learning), IQAC, who highlighted the strategic need for proactive planning, stakeholder engagement in campus safety management, comprehensive safety planning strategies, and also covered fire drills and evacuation procedures, stressing the importance of regular drills and clear protocols. Fire Protection was addressed by Mr. Yeasir Arafat, Associate Professor of EEE, who detailed fire detection technologies and firefighting infrastructure. Lab Safety was presented by Prof. Dr. Md Easir Arafat Khan, Professor of Chemical Engineering, focusing on preventing and managing lab-related incidents and accidents. The sessions were followed by group activities to collaboratively draft a proposed “Safety Policy for BUET”, reflecting the university’s commitment to participatory policy-making and continuous improvement.

The closing session was graced by Prof. Dr. Md. Zahurul Haq, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, as Chief Guest, and Prof. Dr. Ishtiaque Ahmed, Chairman of the Fire Safety Implementation Committee and Professor of Civil Engineering, as Special Guest. Both highlighted the strategic importance of safety in quality assurance and institutional development. The Workshop Sessions were moderated by Dr. Annesha Enam, Additional Director, IQAC, BUET. The workshop ended with a vote of thanks from Prof. Dr. Md Ashikur Rahman Joarder, Additional Director, IQAC, BUET.

This Training Course was part of the ongoing activities of the IQAC, which started its journey in January 2015. The prime task of the IQAC is to develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic improvement in the performance of institutions. The IQAC works to ensure continuous improvement in the entire operations of the institution and assures all the stakeholders connected with higher education, namely students, parents, teachers, staff, funding agencies and society in general.
